How to change notifications
Notification preferences can be changed in two locations: your phone’s settings and WhatsApp SettingsChange notifications through your phone’s settings
1. Go to your phone's Settings.
2. Tap Apps & notifications > WhatsApp > Notifications.
3. On most phones, you’ll have the option to:
- Block all notifications if you don’t want notifications, not even the WhatsApp icon, appearing on your phone's status bar.
- Silent notifications if you don’t want to have any sound, vibration, or peeking notifications. Peeking notifications are an Android feature that allows notifications to briefly show at the top of your screen while you're using your phone
- Hide sensitive content from showing in the notification preview on the lock screen.
- You can use notification categories to set notification preferences on Android 8 and newer
Note: You can also go to your phone's Settings > Sound to adjust the volume of your notifications
Change notifications through WhatsApp Settings
- Open WhatsApp.
- Tap More options
> Settings > Notifications
.
- You can change notifications for messages, groups, and calls by choosing:
- Whether to turn conversation tones for incoming and outgoing messages on or off.
- Notification tone or ringtone.
- Vibration duration.
- You can choose whether to show popup notifications on Android 9 and older. This allows notifications to show in the middle of your screen.
- Notification light color for supported phones.
- Whether to use high priority notifications on Android 5 and newer. This shows previews of notifications at the top of your screen and can be used to disable peeking notifications. Turning off high priority notifications will result in WhatsApp notifications being placed lower in the notification drawer.
Note: If you want to reset your notification settings, tap More options
> Reset notification settings > RESET.
Customize notifications for an individual chat or group
- Open an individual chat or group.
- Tap the contact name or group subject.
- Tap Custom notifications.
- Check Use custom notifications.
- Here you can choose:
- Notification tone.
- Vibration duration.
- Whether to show popup notifications on Android 9 and older.
- Notification light color for supported phones.
- Whether to use high priority notifications on Android 5 and newer.
Note: If you want to reset your notification settings, tap More options
